About me

I’m Marie, a marketing copywriter, author and writing coach, helping people in both business and creative writing with judgement-free, honest and practical advice.

Life changing brochure

My writing journey began in 1994 when I was handed a brochure for Holmesglen TAFE that listed the Diploma of Arts – Professional Writing and Editing.

As soon as I read that title, my whole body resonated. They had courses where you could learn to be a professional writer? I had no idea they existed…I decided then and there to throw in my corporate job and do the course. Fast forward 25+ years and here I am, a copywriter, published author and writing coach.

Writing is my happy place

I find people and the things they have to say endlessly fascinating. That’s why I love being a website copywriter. I get to learn about different industries, different ways of doing business and different methods of connecting with people…and then I get to write about them.

Some of the most fun I’ve had at work was the day I was writing content for both a celebrity chef and a building and construction consultant. While doing a deep dive into their businesses, I found I was writing two pieces that were weirdly connected.

The first page was about how to maintain your manufacturing plant and equipment and the second was how to keep your plant materials (vegetables) crisp in the fridge.

Two completely different services and here they were, both talking about how important (admittedly different) plants were. I had a bit of a chuckle about that.

That surprise connection reminded me how much I love writing for all sorts of  businesses…and that I’m really lucky to be able to do what I do.

My published works

When I’m not writing website or other marketing copy, I write for adults as well as children, and have been shortlisted for a number of fiction and non-fiction awards, including the Victorian Community History Awards.

My work has been on The Age best-sellers list and my most recent title, Zelda’s Big Adventure – a book about a chook who wants to be an astronaut – was a ‘Notable’ picture book in the CBCA Awards. The day Zelda was read on Playschool by the wonderful Leigh Sales, is one of my proudest (and most surreal) moments.

I teach writing across a range of genres, review children’s books for Magpies Magazine and offer manuscript assessments for new writers.

My current work in progress is a humorous, feminist, crime space opera.
